Blink-182 Make Reunion Official on Grammy Stage

“Isn’t it great to see the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder back together again,” blink-182’s Mark Hoppus joked as his band — together again — took the stage at the Grammy Awards to present the trophy for Best Rock Album to Coldplay. “We used to play music together, and we decided to play music together once again,” added Travis Barker. The bottom line: “Blink-182 is back.”

A statement released just after their Grammy appearance reads, “Hi. We’re blink-182. This past week there’ve been a lot of questions about the current status of the band, and we wanted you to hear it straight from us. To put it simply, We’re back. We mean, really back. Picking up where we left off and then some. In the studio writing and recording a new album. Preparing to tour the world yet again. Friendships reformed. 17 years deep in our legacy.”

The band leave things with the words “Summer 2009. Thanks and get ready…”

The band has been officially on hiatus since February 2005; since then Tom DeLonge has gone on to form Angels & Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker put together +44. In November 2008, after the jet crash that nearly killed Barker, Hoppus blogged that the threesome had resumed communication. “In the midst of everything else that has happened lately, Tom, Travis, and I have all spoken together,” he wrote. “First through a number of phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours. … We’re just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking.” The band’s next album would be their first since 2003’s blink-182.

koRn

Musical revolutions can foment in the oddest places: Athens, Georgia. Aberdeen, Washington. Bakersfield, California.

That's right, Bakersfield; a bleak, arid little town just west of Death Valley that could double as a David Lynch movie set-if there were anything going on, that is. As a kid Fieldy Arvizu spent much of his adolescence "standing around in dirt fields, drinking beer, watching other kids fight." At some point, Fieldy and some friends decided their time would be better spent taking out their frustrations on musical instruments instead.

And rock music would never be the same.

So Fieldy, James "Munky" Shaffer, David Silveria, Brian "Head" Welch, and eventually, an assistant coroner with a troubled past named Jonathan Davis left Bakersfield for Los Angeles and collectively became known as KORN. It helped that they all had common influences--the angry, urban stylings of hip-hop, the heavy, riff-driven angst of death metal. But the sounds emanating from this band's Huntington Beach rehearsal space would soon set an entirely fresh musical precedent--and set off a wave of imitators that eventually threatened to engulf the band itself.

After touring for nearly two years, KORN was signed by Immortal and released their now-classic eponymous 1994 debut. KORN opened with the prophetic, gravel-throated challenge "Are you ready?!" before kicking into the heaviest guitar sound yet heard in rock thanks to the team of Shaffer and Welch, who tuned their already-low 7-string guitars even lower and played with no regard for traditional harmonic consonance. The sound was metallic sludge, but tempered oddly by bassist Fieldy and drummer Silveria, who added a mix of porn-soundtrack funk and hip-hop rhythms that was puzzlingly aggressive and chill. Next, nursery-rhyme-like melodies were woven into the dark mix, helping make KORN the creepiest, heaviest debut since Black Sabbath. But Davis had no desire to sing about devils and witches; he was busy exorcising real-life demons. Songs such as "Faget" and "Shoots and Ladders" were discomfortingly personal confessionals of shattered childhood, and by album's end Davis was literally in tears in the harrowing "Daddy."

"Are you ready?!" Well, commercial radio sure wasn't. And neither was MTV. Not yet, anyway.

So KORN took their grisly show on the road someplace they knew it'd get noticed: back to the tour circuit, and a stint on Ozzfest. The band's unique sound may have been unfamiliar, but the kids knew it rocked mightily-and many of them could directly relate to Davis' grim lyrical obsessions. At that point in time, there was quite simply no band on earth like KORN.

And so they began to amass a following that would send their next album, 1996's brutal yet cheekily titled Life is Peachy, into platinum sales. And this time at least the press was ready. "...Perverts, psychopaths and paranoiacs" gushed the Chicago Tribune. "An ingeniously twisted piece of personal hell" raved Cleveland's Plain Dealer.

And while Peachy served more to reinforce the band's core sound rather than innovate in the manner of the debut, it did introduce to the world to a side of the band no one ever suspected existed: humor. The bagpipe-driven cover version of War's "Lowrider" was just one example. An A-Z dictionary of vulgarity called "K@#%!" was another-though some critics and self-appointed moral guardians were put off by the language. One Zeeland, Michigan high school administrator told the press that KORN was "indecent, vulgar, and obscene" shortly after suspending a student for wearing a T-shirt that merely said "KORN." After the band filed a cease-and-desist order against the school on behalf of the student, he was reinstated. But the episode marks yet another milestone for the band: it was the first of many times the band would go to bat for its fans.

Years of touring followed again as the band fortified its fan-base to the degree that their next album, 1998's Follow the Leader, would debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200. The band charted two bona fide singles with "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash," while the album's actual "rap-metal" tracks ("Children of the KORN" with guest rapper Ice Cube, and "All in the Family" with guest abuser Fred Durst) were some of the band's hardest-hitting to date, and reaffirmed their status as the band by which others would be judged in this genre.

Others seemed to agree. Rolling Stone christened Follow the Leader one of the best alternative albums of the '90s, praising KORN's ability to channel "their disgust with the state of the nation--and the generation doomed to inherit it--into booming, articulate violence."

Booming, articulate violence aside, Follow the Leader exposed yet another side of KORN.

When a 14-year-old boy suffering from terminal intestinal cancer requested to meet the band for a few minutes through the Make-A-Wish foundation, the band was stunned. And nervous. But they hit it off, and the few minutes turned into a day, and that turned into a few more days, and then a song-"Justin."

Reaffirming KORN's populist roots were their weekly live Internet video broadcasts from the studio during the album's making. These "after school specials" kept fans up on the progress of the record, offered them live, call-in Q&A sessions with the band themselves, and introduced them to guests running the gamut from members of 311, the Deftones, and Limp Bizkit to porn stars like Ron Jeremy and Randi Rage.

In yet another populist move, the band launched "KORN Kampaign '98," a political campaign-style American tour to promote their album that featured "fan conferences" in major cities throughout the country. KORN also put together a heavy-rock-and-rap arena circus, mockingly called the Family Values Tour, which featured everyone from Ice Cube to Limp Bizkit to Rammstein, and proved to be one of 1998's most successful tours. A live compilation CD, The Family Values Tour '98, was certified gold the following summer, when KORN performed an explosive set at Woodstock '99.

Meanwhile, KORN's record label Elementree was up and running just fine as its first signed act, Orgy, scored a platinum record for them with Candyass.

By now, almost every heavy band on the planet was playing down-tuned 7-string guitars (which were virtually extinct before KORN). The proliferation of sound-alike bands ironically placed the band in a tenuous position: Not only was KORN in danger of seeming "played out" in the very genre they spearheaded, the beginnings of a backlash to "rap-metal" chart domination were cropping up in the media. KORN knew that another Peachy or Leader, however great, however welcome by fans, and however commercially successful, would not do. It was time to reinvent themselves and break from the pack-a risky move given the band's traditionally loyal following. KORN took some time off to work on what would be one of the most important records of their career.

"We knew when we wrote this album that we were going to have to do something really great," Shaffer said at the time. "...We had to move forward, push the boundaries, and create something very personal."

In yet another nod to their audience, KORN allowed the fans to design the cover. Fans submitted their work, and one fan painting was chosen for the record's striking cover art. Several runners-up got limited-edition album covers of their own work.

Musically, Issues turned out to be the best album since the group's debut release, and eclipsed even that record in strength of songwriting. When Issues was finally released, all the band's efforts paid off wildly. For the second time in their career, they debuted at No. 1. They had yet another high-charting single with the eerie, crushing "Falling Away From Me." And the record went quadruple platinum. This was followed by yet another massively successful tour, which kicked off on Halloween 1999 at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater.

If Issues represented an artistic, critical, and commercial triumph at a crucial moment for the band, how would KORN respond to the inevitable pressure of its follow-up?

By making a better one: Untouchables. Using a 24-BIT sampling rate--twice the highest rate normally used for recording--KORN and producer Michael Beinhorn have created a rich sonic panorama. Unfathomably heavy, uncompromisingly introspective, and startlingly unique, Untouchables catapults KORN to yet another level.

But what should we expect? After all, this is a band marked by an insatiable desire to push the rock envelope. It's what makes them KORN.

Prepare for Sunburst next month

The second edition of the Sunburst Festival arrives next month with Korn, Erykah Badu and N.E.R.D. as the main attractions.

Following weeks of speculation and feverish online forums about who will be headlining next month’s Sunburst KL International Music Festival 2009, organiser Pineapple Concerts’ managing director Razman Razali finally revealed in a press conference recently that American nu metal pioneers Korn will do the honours.

He also listed out the remaining international acts that will be gracing the event and they are R&B singer Erykah Badu; a capella act Naturally 7; Skye, the former lead singer for Brit trip hop band Morcheeba and hipster rock hip-hop act N.E.R.D.

The fest is slated for March 21 at the Polo Pavilion, Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort, Kuala Lumpur.

The event starts at 2pm and ends 12 hours later, giving music fans a marathon of a party to write home about.

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis is set to give the Sunburst Fest a dose of teeth-grinding nu metal next month.

The international line-up for this year’s Sunburst Festival, presented by X Pax, has been the talk of town of late. Word has it that multiple Grammy award-winning Brit band Coldplay had been initially touted as the headlining act.

“In the end, they (Coldplay) proved to be too expensive. If Coldplay were to play at Sunburst (this year), it would have ultimately limited the number of international acts at the festival,” Razman revealed.

Since the inception of the Sunburst festival last year which featured such acts as Incubus, John Legend, The Roots, and George Clinton among others, there has been a lot of excitement and anticipation surrounding this year’s festival and which act may be appearing this time around.

Bands like 311 and Prodigy were rumoured to be in the line-up and when a press conference announcing some of the international acts was held earlier this month, the organisers would only confirm one international act - N.E.R.D. – to the disappointment of many.

Nevertheless, people were still hopeful that one or more big international acts would be down for Sunburst.

Erykah Badu is the headlining R&B star to attract the hip and trendy masses.

As it stands, the international line-up for the festival this year is still impressive as none of them have played live in Malaysia before. Headliner Korn for example, has amassed a strong local following over the years and will definitely draw a crowd at the festival.

Since making a breakthrough in 1994, the Bakersfield, California-raised band has set the standard for alternative metal. Early albums like Korn and Life is Peachy put the band in sight for big things before chart-topping movers like Follow the Leader and Issues arrived to push Korn towards the mainstream lights.

Korn, after line-up changes, project bands and live sessionists, now consists of Jonathan Davis (vocals), James “Munky” Shaffer (guitar) and Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu (bass) as stated in the band’s Myspace page.

Frontman Davis, now fully recovered from a blood-related ailment, has noted that the band’s new album, set for release later this year, will return to its heavy nu metal roots.

The band’s appearance at Sunburst next month is a rare treat for Korn fans in this region, mainly because it might serve as a road-testing exercise for its new material.

Last year drew a crowd of nearly 15,000 to the inaugural Sunburst fest. This year with Korn in the mix, the numbers should be cranked up further with rock fans thronging the outdoor venue.

Elsewhere, R&B star Erykah Badu is a stunning choice for the festival as she takes leave from motherhood to play a show here.

The 38-year-old gave birth to a baby girl earlier this month, but music is what this singer is about. Badu, renowned for her unique blend of hip hop, soul and jazz, arrives in Malaysia with her live band to plug her acclaimed album New Amerykah, Part One (4th World War).

N.E.R.D. is the choice to interest the trendy crowd, with the band’s punk/hip-hop/R&B amalgamation. N.E.R.D. is a trio that includes celebrity producer Pharrell Williams, alongside friends Chad Hugo and Shay Hayley.

N.E.R.D. members (from left) Shay Haley, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are no strangers to the punk/hip hop and rock mash-up.

The band’s third album, Seeing Sounds, was released last year.

Pharrell is the lead singer and unofficial frontman while Hugo is the silent, mysterious element. The former is confirmed for Sunburst while Hugo’s appearance is still pending his schedule.

Standing amongst the big names is Skye Edwards, an East London survivor, who fronted the trip hop outfit Morcheeba in the late 1990s.

Skye has gone on to a solo career, and as a charismatic and sultry vocalist gifted with fab dulcet tones, she is bound to win over new fans.

Next month’s Sunburst festival, however, falls on the local and regional acts to keep the stages busy.

Skye Edwards, former singer of Morcheeba, is to play a solo set at the Sunburst Fest.

This year’s local acts include Aseana Percussion Unit, Butterfingers, Estrella, Estranged, Gerhana Ska Cinta, Pesawat, The Otherside Orchestra, Bunkface, Dead Mushroom, Hujan, Projek Pistol and They Will Kill Us All, among others. Regional acts consist the likes of Nidji, Malique & D’Essentials, Russian Winters and Agrikulture.

This year’s Sunburst event will feature six stages compared to last year’s four and the organisers promised it to be a fun-filled event of music and fun and games.

The Silent Disco Arena also makes its first appearance at Sunburst where not a single speaker will be in sight as revellers rock out to sets by Loops Collective, Vice Modern Disco and Twilight Actiongirl via the 300 pairs of wireless headphones available.

As far as festival line-ups go, there are still enough of thrills on the Sunburst bill to get the punters through the door.

koRn bIograpHy

This US band formed in the early 90s in Bakersfield, California, originally under the names LAPD and Creep. They toured widely, playing over 200 shows, before hooking up with producer Ross Robinson and recording their self-titled debut album for EastWest Records in 1994. The album was the first by one of the so-called "nu metal" bands to break into the mainstream charts. The ferocious fusion of heavy metal and hip-hop essayed by original nu metal bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones proved hugely popular with teenage audiences in North America and Europe.

Subsequently based in Huntington Beach in California, Korn originally comprised Jonathan Davis (b. Jonathan Houseman Davis, 18 January 1971, Bakersfield, California, USA; vocals), Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu (b. 2 November 1969, Bakersfield, California, USA; bass), James "Munky" Shaffer (b. 16 June 1970, Rosedale, California, USA; guitar), Brian Welch (b. 19 June 1970, Torrance, California, USA; guitar/vocals) and David Silveria (b. 21 September 1972, San Leandro, California, USA; drums), released their first single, "Blind", which was widely shown on late-night MTV shows. The album gave them their commercial breakthrough and saw them cited in Billboard magazine as "the first debut hardcore rock act to top the Heatseekers chart and one of the first to crack the upper half of the Billboard 200 in the last two years." Much of this success arose from the reputation garnered by their live work, which was bolstered by tours alongside House Of Pain, Biohazard, 311, Sick Of It All, Danzig, Marilyn Manson and Megadeth. A second single, "Shoots And Ladders", featured Davis playing the bagpipes. The 1996 follow-up Life Is Peachy was another ferocious set, although further breakthrough success was limited by the explicit lyrics liberally laced throughout.

In late 1997, Korn established their own label, Elementree. They also made the news by serving a cease-and-desist order to the assistant principal of a Michigan high school, who had suspended a student for wearing a T-shirt featuring the band's name. The eagerly anticipated Follow The Leader was recorded with help from Guns N'Roses collaborator, Steve Thompson. The album was a commercial and critical success, debuting at US number 1 in September 1998. Highlights included "It's On" and first single "Got The Life'. Their Family Values touring show also established itself as one of the most successful live ventures of the 90s. The band's prominence on the hugely popular US alternative scene, alongside acts such as Limp Bizkit, Fear Factory and Slipknot, was confirmed by the chart-topping success of 1999"s Issues. Despite an injury to Silveria, the band forged on with a highly successful tour which saw them employing Mike Bordin (Faith No More) to cover for the indisposed drummer.

At the end of 2000, the members of Korn elected to take some time out to recharge their batteries, although Fieldy took the opportunity to record a solo album under the Fieldy's Dreams alias, and Davis was hired to assemble the soundtrack to the movie Queen Of The Damned. They reconvened to record their fifth studio set, Untouchables, released in 2002. The following year's Take A Look In The Mirror, although lacking melodic finesse, certainly made up for it in intensity.

Guitarist Brian Welch left the band in February 2005 to devote himself to religion. The remaining quartet subsequently completed the recording of the same year's See You On The Other Side. The album was the first product to emerge from their new contract with Virgin Records. Further personnel change ensued when drummer David Silveria was put on extended hiatus from the band during early sessions for their next album. Ex-Missing Persons drummer Terry Bozzio and Brooks Wackerman of Bad Religion helped them finish the recording of the album, which also featured the band's touring keyboardist Zac Baird. The untitled album was released to mixed reviews in July 2007.

KORn

Hey TV Hitsers!
Part of having the best job at the best magazine ever, is that going to awesome concerts, is all in days work. I was lucky enough to score tickets to Korn a little while ago and let me say, it was the best concert I’ve been to.

Thought Korn weren’t up to much anymore? You couldn’t have been more wrong. They’ve sold more than 25 million records worldwide and earned six Grammy nods and two wins to date. They’ve been together for 14 massive years and have been one of the most groundbreaking bands to ever hit the airwaves.

Supported by crazy metal bands like Biohazard, Chimaira, Throwdown and Bloodsimple, the crowd went nuts and moshed like they’d never moshed before. Sure a few people were carried out of the crowd looking a bit worse for wear but that’s all part of the fun! When lead singer Jonathan Davis hit the stage though, all bets were off and every ticket holder was on their feet rocking out. There was utter pandemonium as hit after hit was played and the mass of Korn lovers reached its peak. Playing old and new songs, not one fan left disappointed, especially not this one! James “Munky” Shaffer hammed it up for the audience, with a constant energy that overflowed onto the crowd. Did I mention Jonathan’s microphone was a customised mic shaped like a stretched out silver woman? How cool is that?! Encore!

Rock on!

KoRn, Biography

Bicara tentang Nu Metal, pasti pikiran langsung tertuju kepada KoRn. Walaupun sebagian besar Metalhead menganggap Faith No More sebagai “Bapak Angkat” Nu Metal, tapi peran KoRn sangat besar dalam membuat nama genre ini melejit di awal Millenium. KoRn cukup unik.

Jauh sebelum KoRn lahir, bakal janinnya berasal dari grup L.A.P.D (Love And Peace Dude).

Namanya adalah Jonathan Davis, the man with Bagpipe :))

Single pertama album ini, No Place To Hide, berhasil dinominasikan dalam Grammy Award. Single kedua mereka A.D.I.D.A.S. (All Day I Dream About Sex) juga cukup sukses.

Kemudian pada tahun 1998, KoRn merilis Follow The Leader.

Single-single dari album ini antara lain Got The Life dan Freak On The Leash.

Pada tahun 2003, album Take A Look In The Mirror rilis.

Single-single pada album ini antara lain Right Now, Y’All Want a Single dan Everything I’ve Known. Ada cerita menarik di balik pembuatan single Y’all Want A Single.

Tidak ingin berlarut-larut dalam kesedihan, KoRn merilis See You On The Other Side pada tahun 2005.

See You On The Other Side demi menutupi identitas mereka.

KoRn sekarang tinggal tersisa 3 orang tapi mereka tetap mempertahankan eksistensi mereka. Tentu saja mereka dibantu sesama musisi yang lain. Banyak nama besar yang pernah membantu proses recording atau live concert KoRn sejak mereka menjadi trio. Orang-orang itu antara lain Joey Jordison (SlipKnoT) dan Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion).

Sekian jauh perjalanan KoRn.

Blink 182 Siap Reuni, Asal...

Sementara vokalis Tom membentuk band Angels and Airwaves.
